Recently retired U.S. Marshal David Gonzales spoke to us about his nearly 50-year career in law enforcement.  Starting at 19 years old as a deputy sheriff for the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, spent 25 years with Arizona DPS and then sworn in as the U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona on May 3rd, 2002.

Contributing to Crutches 4 Africa

   
 
Recently the Rotary Club of Scottsdale volunteers moved our collected
medical mobility devices to the container that will  travel to Africa along with
the Interact high school students.
Our club contributed 47 walkers, 31 pairs of crutches, 7 wheelchairs, and 3 canes
to the effort.

Richard J. Gray, M.D., is a surgical oncologist and professor of surgery
at the Arizona campus of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. He has been
on the faculty of Mayo Clinic since 2001. Dr. Gray is the co-director of
the Mayo Clinic Center for Breast Health in Arizona and co-chair of
the Breast Disease Group for all of Mayo Clinic.
 
He has published more than140 peer-reviewed research manuscripts.
His areas of specialized clinicalcare and research include: breast cancer
prevention and treatment, retroperitoneal sarcoma, melanoma and
surgical oncology.

Please Note - Our next meeting on October 20th will be at the old Millennium Hotel, now renamed The McCormick Scottsdale. It is still owned by Millennium Hotels, a very large upscale hotel chain with 120 hotels in 19 countries headquartered in London.

Next Speaker - Col. Mark Tillman, Chief Pilot Air Force One

This is the first edition of our new eBulletin. This will be issued once a week featuring our next speaker and highlights of our last meeting.

Check out the above video of featuring Col. Mark Tillman, chief pilot of Air Force One under Geaorge W. Bush for 8 years. It is quite lenghty (45 min.) but very interesting. The first 15 minutes are an overview. The last 15 minutes are a very interesting story of the secret trip on Thanksgiving Day 2003 by President Bush to serve dinner to our troops during the active and dangerous days of the early war in Iraq. Only 5 outside people knew about the trip and AF One used a different call sign to keep the mission secret. Very good story.

Rotary Park Day Featured Some Special Guests

Scottsdale Rotarians' semi-annual Park Day was rather unusual.  First, a SNAFU (ask Park Shaw what this acronym means) resulted in the City not securing our usual ramada near the Hann-designed Unity Plaza...Scottsdale Insurance beat us to the punch.  Ed Adler and Ken Brown, our grill kings, showed up early to start the barbeque and found the interlopers in site.  Ed and Ken quickly reconnoitered the situation and assessed that we could move to the other ramada on the other side of the playground and further, they made an arrangement with Scottsdale Insurance to use the big grills at our usual ramada.  Diplomatic kudos to the two of them.  Kudos also to our sponsor, The Sugar Bowl and Carroll Huntress III who did a fantastic job of the food.  Don't forget to take your out-of-town guests to this local legend.  In a way, the other ramada, though smaller, allowed for more benches to extend out in one direction so we got lemons and made lemonade.

Our meeting was also unusual in that we had a unique program with handlers from Liberty Wildlife and their friends, a golden eagle and a bald eagle.  The eagles were walked around the whole group so that we could all get close to them.  Something is particularly touching in coming so close to America's national bird and symbol.  It was all a Park Day we will not soon forget.  (Thanks to Dr. Honora Norton for the photo montages.)

Social Event at the Sanctuary an Elegant Affair

The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is the definition of modern elegance.  About 40 Scottsdale Rotarians and their guests gathered on the Edge Bar overlooking the negative-edge pool, Mummy Mountain and a setting sun for a lovely cocktail party together.  What a glorious part of the world in which to live and what a lovely evening we had together.

SCC Awards the Scottsdale Rotary Club its Presidential Citation

Scottsdale Community College president Dr. Jan Gehler awarded the Scottsdale Rotary Club Foundation the Catclaw Acacia level award for the Foundation's support over the years with SCC student scholarships.  Attending the March 29, 2012, awards dinner was John Thornton and Jeanette Griswold.  John Thornton accepted the award on behalf of the Club and its members, shown below.  Also shown below is the handsome plaque presented to the Club.  A similar plaque is mounted on the Two Rivers Wall in the old quad section of campus.  Scottsdale Rotarians, you can be proud of your support of students' higher education over the years and our local community college recognizes your support.

Salt River Fields Game Day a Blast

Scottsdale Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, and guests enjoyed lunch and a game on the Coors Party Deck of the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick ballpark March 26.  Meredith Munger gave an invocation from the Baseball Hall of Fame which must have worked because the right team won.  We also had a V.I.P. visit from Josh Rawitch, the Diamondback's Senior Vice President for Communications.  Also attending were District Governor Alan Havir, DGEE Jay Jones, and DGEEE John Pennypacker.  The District is committed to coordinating with the Rotary Club of Scottsdale recognizing its size and depth of membership.  A great day was had by all.  Photo montage of the day by Dr. Honora Norton...

Bob and Louise McCall Visual Arts Scholarship Prize Donors Honored

Six donors of $1,000 or more to the Bob and Louise McCall Visual Arts Scholarship Prize were honored on February 27 with signed prints by Louise McCall.  Bob McCall was a wonderfully generous member of the Club, often donating his prints, paintings, stamp montages, and flight suit patches that he designed for various space and aeronautical agencies.  Paul Critchfield started the endowed fund and it became the fundraising focus for FY 2011 and 2012.  The $10,00 prize will be awarded along with our other scholarships in April though it will have significantly more rigorous standards.

The three newest members of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale were inducted on February 27:  shown are Brent Sullivan who was previously a Rotarian and has had experience with Interact, Suzanne Klapp who transferred from the Pinnacle Peak club, and Susan Martz, a certified fundraising professional who comes to us from Phoenix Children's Hospital.  We are delighted to welcome all three.  Please extend a gracious and hospitable hand to these new RCS Rotarians at your earliest convenience.

Congressman Schweikert Visits the Rotary Club of Scottsdale

Mike Ryan invited and introduced Congressman David Schweikert to the Rotary Club of Scottsdale.  The Congressman presented sobering statistics on the fiscal health of the Union.  Congressman Schweikert compared the current $15 trillion national debt to the $80 trillion Medicare liability.  Rotary is a non-political body and the Congressman graciously steered clear of particular partisan solutions but focused on the math and the reality of liabilities we face as a nation.  Originally scheduled last December, we were fortunate to reschedule him and hear Washington budget news directly from an inside perspective.

Rotary Youth Exchange Orientation for Our Two RYE Students

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) students and their parents attended a District 5510 orientation meeting all day Saturday February 4.  The RYE orientation program guided students and their parents through a number of topics from the rules of the road in living up to Rotary standards abroad to more banale topics of what to expect when they first arrive including a required list of questions of their host families.  Your RYE Youth Exchange Officers Max Rumbaugh and Jeanette Griswold put in a lot of time on this program and it shows in changing the lives of young people.  What better diplomacy than sending our kids abroad to learn about another culture and bringing in foreign exchange students and giving them a year-long taste of Scottsdale life.  Pictured below are The rotary Club of Scottsdale outbound students Tasina and Emily and thir parents, along with President John Thornton, Jeanette Griswold, and District Governor Alan Havir.

Fantasic Luncheon Programs...a Hallmark of The Rotary Club of Scottsdale

The Rotary Club of Scottsdale's size allows it to draw interesting speakers often unavailable to smaller groups.  The last two luncheon speakers are cases in point.  The January 30 meeting featured a briefing on the proposed Resolution Copper mine near Superior.  The mine, tapping into the world's third largest known copper reserves, will be a $5 billion, 40-year facility directly employing 1,400 workers through a 7,000+-foot-deep mine shaft.  Bruce Richardson, the speaker, described how mine walls at that depth reach 130 degrees so the facility will likely have the world's largest air conditioning system.  The economic effects on the region could be tremendous.  Bruce faced interesting questions though about modern mining, water, and the effect of the mine on the Boyce Thompson arboretum.

Our February 6 speaker was Michael Bassoff, president of TGen.  He briefed the Club on TGen's inroads into applied genetic research and a number of drug therapies developed to target genes gone haywire.  The efficiency and accuracy of gene-tailored therapy made for a compelling story and the his recounting of individual successes was heartening.  TGen's work has resulted in doubling the life expectancy of a particular pancreatic cancer.  Michael also described TGen's partnering with local hospitals and medical schools.  Again, Scottsdale Rotarians asked insightful questions that added to the presentation.

Annual Meeting and Mid-Year Report

Dear Members:  Monday’s meeting featured our annual meeting and a great program by Mike Ryan, Tom Sadvary, Dr. Jan Gehler, and Ron McCullagh.  The annual meeting included a mid-year report with (unaudited cash-basis) financial results for the first half-year.  I posted the Mid-Year Report on the Club Web site under Admin>View Club Documents in the spirit of two key objectives I keep in mind, transparency and accountability, as I cited in my induction speech.

Kari Baker did not require a vote as she is president-elect.  The newly elected slate take on their responsibilities July 1, 2012, along with the other approximately 34,117 clubs worldwide, and the induction ceremony is scheduled for June 25.
 
Generally, Rotary Club presidents, mid-term, start counting down the months until they are relieved from duty but I am just the opposite.  I am enjoying myself serving as your president and you might have to wrench the gavel out of my cold dead hands.  Rotary Club of Scottsdale members are such wonderful, generous, professional, and accomplished people that you are a delight to serve.  We have so much to accomplish in six more months.  I must warn future presidents that I am conducting Rotary Club of Scottsdale business two hours a day every day, but the time is well spent and the results are rewarding.  Thank you all who have sent me e-mails and telephone calls of congratulations on this year’s progress; they lift me up.  In the spirit of Jerry Mills, keep in mind “Come Join Us.”  Let’s increase our presence in the community through stronger membership that also draws in others.

Next Meeting January 23 Featuring Key Issues for 2012 and Annual Meeting

Reminder that we do not meet Monday January 16, a holiday commemorating The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We are back in action for a jam-packed program on January 23.  Mike Ryan and company are going to discuss key issues facing the nation, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and health care issues that will likely affect our businesses.

In addition, we will hold our annual meeting on January 23 at which the new slate of officers and directors will be elected for terms beginning July 1, 2012.  We should also pass a new constitution according to RI policies.  A boilerplate constitution with our club name filled in is downloaded in Club Documents on this Web site.  Login and on the Admin page under "My ClubRunner" you'll find "View Club Documents" for the Proposed Constitution.

Landing in Luzon with Co. A. Park Shaw (Ret.)

Park Shaw was last Monday's featured speaker with a remembrance of his landing in Luzon, Philippines, January 9, 1945.  He was part of the largest amphibious attack in WWII in the Pacific theater.  Park described how the 1,000 ships and 100,000 men traveled 1,400 miles through Japanese-held Philippine islands to attack and retake the island, manned by 287,000 Japanese.  Park brought the helmet he wore on that day and his uniform that was cotton fatigues; not a hint of Kevlar or body armor in sight.  Park had a number of other items from the period and brought slides of a map of the trip, the landing, pictures of him on the island, and a picture of his return 40 years later to receive three medals from the Philippines government for his actions that day.  The whole program was a unique insight into the "D-Day" of the Pacific and a key date in U.S. Military history.  Pictured is Park and COl. Jim Morris (Ret.) who introduced Park.  Col. Morris was a military parachutist, logging 1,800 jumps.  Thanks to Park for a great presentation.

December 19 Holiday Party a Great Event

Scottsdale Rotarians enjoyed a wonderful banquet put on by the Camelback Inn and entertainment by two groups:  the Spotlight Youth Theater's Pitches and Tones singing and dancing troupe and the Hurtcounty Bluegrass Band.  First, the Pitches and Tones troupe performed singing and dancing numbers with professionalism and enthusiasm reminiscent of a Broadway musical, belying their young ages.  Then, President John officially opened the holiday party with a welcome, two invocations respecting two of our ancient traditions, the pledge of allegiance, and then the  program was turned over Dr. Joe Hegstad who lead the group for three carols.  Then, the Hurtcounty Bluegrass Band performed bluegrass numbers that enthralled everyone.  The children in the audience were then convened on stage to sing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer which ushered in Santa Claus who handed out presents to all the good boys and girls.  A wonderful Holiday Party was had by all, thanks to the Camelback Inn, Dr. Joe Hegstad, Meredith Munger, Craig Miller, Patti Miller for coordination, and all those who made the event so special.

The Holiday Party also featured an announcement by Bob Murray of the Club's commitment to the Bob and Louise McCall Visual Arts Scholarship Prize.  The announcement was particularly poignant as Louise McCall and her daughter Lindy attended the party and had donated a signed print for donations of $1,000 or more.  The first Scholarship Prize will be awarded in April along with six other higher-education scholarships to worthy Scottsdale-area students.

Scottsdale Rotarians Enjoy Gershwin Event

Scottsdale Rotarians enjoyed dinner and a performance on December 6  of "Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegel and his show Gershwin and Friends."  Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “the Leonard Bernstein of the keyboard,” pianist Jeffrey Siegel offers witty insight into the lives of the great composers, explaining each composition before performing it in its entirety. Gershwin and Friends features the glorious melodies and jazzy rhythms of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in the composer’s rarely heard solo piano arrangement, Copland’s humorous Cat and the Mouse and Hoe-Down from Rodeo, Bernstein’s touching Anniversaries, The Wall Street Rag by Joplin and more. The performance also includes the Center’s Keyboard in the Sky™ video display, which enables the audience to see the pianist’s hands moving across the keyboard in real time from any seat in the house.

Scottsdale Rotarians Install Floor at Family Promise Homeless Shelter

Image Scottsdale Rotarians gathered at Family Promise of Greater Phoenix, based in Scottsdale, the morning of November 19 to install a new tile floor in the facility's laundry room and to re-stripe the facility's parking lot.  Ted Taylor, Family Promise's Executive Director, graciously guided our volunteer activities with aplomb and provided the obligatory construction coffee and doughnuts to start.  A good time was had by all.  Scottsdale Rotarians prepared the concrete floor in the laundry room and then installed a vinyl composite tile floor and baseboard.  Other Scottsdale Rotarians worked with extraordinary precision to re-stripe the parking area, giving the wheelchair logo a smile.  Attending were Scottsdale Rotarians Garrett Olson, James Ogsbury (and his partner Christine Cook), Carl Munding and John Thornton.

Tree Planted in Honor of Bob McCall

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and Rotary Club of Scottsdale president John Thornton help plant a tree in Rotary Park on Doubletree Rd. in Scottsdale.  The tree was planted in memory of Robert T. McCall, famous air and space artist and graphic artist for "2001 a Space Odyssey."  Bob McCall was a generous member of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale after whom a new scholarship has been named, along with his wife:  The Bob and Louise McCall Art Scholarship Prize.
