 Almost fifty student applicants and several dozen Rotarian judges met on May 28th at Chaparral High School for the Scholarship Interview Night. The event  was a great success.

Scottsdale, AZ - The Rotary Club of Scottsdale, the oldest and largest Rotary club in the East Valley, has awarded through its Foundation, annual scholarships to nine outstanding graduating seniors attending Scottsdale Unified School District high schools.

 The Rotary Club of Scottsdale’s high school scholarship program is a district-wide competition honoring outstanding achievement in five separate categories, plus the Norval O. Tyler Scholarship, which is named after a beloved Rotarian, and the First National Bank of Arizona Scholarships. Students nominated by the five Scottsdale Unified School District high schools competed for scholarships in each category, plus the Norval Tyler and two First National Bank of Arizona Scholarships. After reviewing applications and conducting interviews, the Rotary Club of Scottsdale awarded scholarships to the following students who will attend an accredited Arizona university, college or school in the Fall, 2007:

 

 
 

Applications may be obtained from high school guidance counselors.

EACH APPLICANT MUST: 1) Be a graduating senior attending one of the five Scottsdale Unified School Distrifoundation logo.jpgct high schools; 2) Enroll in and attend an accredited Arizona university, college, community college, vocational or technical school by the Fall of the same year, following the scholarship competition; 3) Be nominated by their high school in one of the scholarship categories described below; 4) Not have been awarded other scholarships totaling more than $5,000 at the time of the interview; 5) Provide recommendations from two teachers or other adults who are familiar with the applicant's activities with respect to the scholarship category in which the applicant is applying; 6) Complete and submit the scholarship application by the stated deadline. 7) Participate in an interview process with Scottsdale Rotarians;  8) Graduate from the nominating high school; 9) Agree to allow the Rotary Club of Scottsdale to make scholarship payments directly to the accredited educational institution; 10) Agree to attend and speak at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale, if they are the scholarship winner.

ATHLETICS: Awarded for accomplishments in school-sponsored team sports. Scholarship Award: $2,000. $1,000 for each of two consecutive years of study.

FINE ARTS: Awarded for accomplishments in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, graphic arts and the like. Scholarship Award: $2,000. $1,000 for each of two consecutive years of study.

PERFORMING ARTS: Awarded for accomplishments in drama, song, dance, orchestra, band, choir, chorus and the like. Scholarship Award: $2,000. $1,000 for each of two consecutive years of study.

SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY: Awarded to students seeking careers in all scientific and computer fields, such as, chemistry, physics, biological sciences, mathematics, computer hardware, computer software and technology and similar activities. Scholarship Award: $2,000. $1,000 for each of two consecutive years of study.

VOCATIONAL / TRADEcfourgraduates.png PROGRAMS: Awarded to students seeking careers in such fields as culinary service, police work, firefighting, health services, bookkeeping, secretarial services, agriculture, automotive repair and similar activities. Scholarship Award: $2,000. $1,000 for each of two consecutive years of study.

THE NORVAL O. TYLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is award annually by Helen Tyler, widow of Norval O. Tyler. Norval was a Scottsdale Rotarian who dedicated himself and his life to the principle of "Service Above Self." Scholarship Award: $1,000

The 2004 Scholarship Recipients

We were delighted to host this year's scholarship recipients at a recent luncheon. Their presentations were tremendous and truly show why this, the club's lognest standing program, is so worthwhile. Great thanks also go out to Lance Davidson for his dedicated work on this committee over the years. The recipients are listed below.

 

Kudos to the some 18 members of our Club who participated the Scottsdale Rotary Club Foundation’s Scottsdale Unified School District-wide competitive scholarship program this year.

On March 29th, Club members, First National Bank of Arizona bankers and Helen Tyler interviewed some thirty-five candidates at Scottsdale’s Chaparral High School and awarded five $2,000 Foundation scholarships plus two $1,000 First National Bank of Arizona Scholarships and the $1,000 Norval O. Tyler Scholarship to the following high school senior students:
