Fowler Grafman, 85, of Phoenix passed away peacefully at home on June
27, 2008. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1923 and received both
his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Lawrence University in
Appleton, Wisconsin. Dayton was an accomplished concert pianist and a
passionate advocate of classical music, especially piano. After a
successful career in college administration in Evanston, Illinois, he
and his wife, Laura, moved to the Valley in 1976. Dayton immediately
became active in the arts community. He spent much of his career in
philanthropy to benefit arts organizations including The Phoenix
Symphony, and the College of Fine Arts at Arizona State University.
Dayton's volunteer activities included serving on the Board of the
Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, curator of the Virginia G.
Piper Concert Series at the Center, and was the past Chairman of the
Board of the Phoenix Symphony. He was an esteemed Steinway artist and
artist-in-residence in Phoenix. He was the recipient of the prestigious
Steinway Award for Community Service and the Steinway 150th Anniversary
Gold Medal. He was a member of the Phoenix Rotary Club 100 for 10 years
and currently a member of Scottsdale Rotary. Dayton was known for his
winning smile, charisma, genuine warmth and caring ways. He was the
epitome of a true gentleman. Dayton is survived by his loving wife of
58 years, Laura, and his devoted daughter, Lynn. A celebration of his
life was held on Wednesday, July 9, at Brophy Chapel
