A Legend Has

The memorial service for Earl
will be held at The First Baptist Church of
Scottsdale (7025 E. Osborn) on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2005 at

A very brief
backstory.....
Earl arrived in Arizona in 1919,
attended Scottsdale High and got a job at Byers' Market after
outrunning other boys there after high school. When he was 16 he was
grading Shea road with a team of mules. In 1935 he bought the
grocery store from Mr. Byers and ran it until 1973 when he retired
from the business. He rented the first gift shop in Scottsdale,
the Posey Post, built the second, third and fourth post offices for
the city, established a morning coffee group for Scottsdale
businessmen which became the Mag's Ham Bun Bunch. He was a charter
member of the Scottsdale Rotary Club and at 94, still came to work
each day (except for summers in the White Mountains). The last six
years running, he shot his age in golf and shot a hole-in-one on his
86th birthday. Earl was active in family, church and business. In
the 1950's and 1960's he was known as Mr. Scottsdale because of his
construction and promotion of the city.
It came as a huge surprise to everyone
when Earl Shipp arrived at the Scottsdale Rotary's 50th
Anniversary celebration, in 2004, with a check for $50,000 for
the Scottsdale Rotary Club Foundation. Earl's generous gift will be
held in perpetuity in order to endow an educational scholarship in
his name.
Our great thanks to Earl for his
overwhelming generosity and many years of service to The Rotary Club
of Scottsdale and our comminuty. Our deepest condolences to Earl's
family. He will be missed.
